A Novel Dual Receiver–Storage Design for Concentrating Solar Thermal Plants Using Beam-Down Optics

چکیده

Advanced power cycles—such as the supercritical carbon dioxide (sCO2) cycle—have potential to reduce levelized cost of energy (LCOE) concentrated solar thermal (CST) plants by significantly boosting their overall solar-to-electric efficiency. To successfully integrate these cycles into CST plants, industry may need transition away from liquid working fluids (e.g., synthetic oils and molten salts) solid and/or gaseous heat transfer media, which are more stable at high temperatures. address this challenge, study investigates a novel rotating receiver–storage unit that could enable high-temperature plants. A validated numerical model is presented for charging discharging processes proposed design. It was found with cast steel storage medium in design, it possible achieve >70% receiver efficiency operation temperatures 850–1000 K. The plant shows design best relatively small systems modularized units 10 m diameter (reaching an density around 80 kWh/m3), can be used drive 5 MWe sCO2 plant. These findings suggest such would have up 9 h effectively employed efficient peaking

Concentrating solar thermal power.

In addition to wind and photovoltaic power, concentrating solar thermal power (CSP) will make a major contribution to electricity provision from renewable energies. Drawing on almost 30 years of operational experience in the multi-megawatt range, CSP is now a proven technology with a reliable cost and performance record. In conjunction with thermal energy storage, electricity can be provided ac...
